Concerned Citizen, I'm sorry but i stand with Taxi womw. I believe there is no true allegations of any women national discrimination or that there is even an insignificancy in women role in our society. Women are just as important as men. They can do the same job. Infact they are free to do so! But they don't choose to. They respect our micronesian culture. The women self-humble themselves and let men (as usual in our cultures) head the government. Relatively the same as our Micronesian families.

Taxi-Womw(posted on October 21)

Concerned Citizen: You know what? I think you have been eating too much rice. Your sense of priority seems seriously affected by an advance stage of diabetes. Our island medical experts say diabetes causes people to be easily irritated and overwhelmed by the most trivial of problems. This is now the second time on this Forum you push your own conception of FSM women discrimination as a national issue. Is this really an issue in the FSM, and if so, of national proportions? What is the discrimination you're complaining about? Don't try to confuse Micronesian cultural distinction between the role of men and women in Micronesian society with the discrimination based on one's gender that the FSM Constitution seeks to prohibit. The Constitution does not try to change the islanders' culture; it only discourages official gender discrimination in governmental actions and policies. And in case you're diabetic condition has deprived you of your ability to see the difference, there is a big difference between the two and both are working amicably well in our Micronesian life. You should be grateful that Micronesian laws and culture relating roles of our men and women is not as bad as other cultures. Look at the Moslem societies. They wrap their women 24 hours a day, seven days a week, allow their men to marry as many of them as they can afford, and beat them up bad if they swayed away from their assigned social paths. Look at China and those African nations that enforce abortions on women pregnancies even if the pregnancies are out of legitimate marriages. Now look at Chief Lambert Lokopwe's dance group of beautiful island girls from the Western Islands of Chuuk. (One of the group of islands in FSM where customs is supposed to be strick on women's cultural mobility is now translating its women's cultural talents into sizable monetary gains, entertaining the Bishop's ordinations of his deacons as well as notable dingnitaries visiting the islands.) Now, what does that tell you about Micronesian cultural evolutions compared with those Moslem, Chinese and African societies? Doesn't that show that even the Church and governments in Micronesia are enjoying and benefiting from Micronesian women cultural evolution, and are not forcing them behind veils? Now look at the FSM Congress' Resolution No. 13-3, sponsored by Yap's Congressman Isac Figir, ratifying the UN Convention Against All Forms of Discrimination Against Women. The prohibition against all forms of discrimination against women is now Law of the Land for the FSM both domestically under its Constitution and internationally by virtue of that UN Convention. Has there any serious repercussions against Congressman Figir from the Yapese Traditional leaders for sponsoring that kind of mentality into national law? (Or for that matter, against Senator Peyal for supporting the Resoultion?) Even in the context of your alleged employment discrimination against FSM women, our personnel laws both on the national and state levels are explicitly against any such practice. But if you try to insist that the preponderance of membership in elective and appointed government positions shows a disparate result against FSM women, the problem is not official discrimination as it is a matter of personal choice. For example, in the history of the FSM, not that many women ever tried to seek elective public office. On the national level, only one woman ever felt strongly enough to try to unseat then Congressman Kalisto Refalopei in a national congressional election. In Pohnpei, one woman recently ran for the state's second highest office. The fact that those women were able to enter the race and compete is what the FSM laws and constitution guarantee; their unsuccessful candidacies were beyond the laws legitimate authority to guarantee as it depended on the people's individual choices. Can you regulate people's private choices to achieve your utopian vision of women parity in FSM governemnt positions? The closest official policy toward such a vision would be similar to what the American colleges are practicing as "Affirmative Action Programs in Admission Policies" or "Quotas" in government hiring, requiring a set number of positions for historically disadvantaged minorities. Would that work in the FSM, and is that a legitimate problem warranting FSM official curative actions? It does not sound like it. There is no official history of gender discrimination in the FSM for the governments to allow such remedial actions. Moreover, the latest we hear is that the courts and learning institutions are still struggling with the question whether such programs in fact are approprate remedies for an elusive perception. Is forced admission or hiring of people the best way to achieve the institutional missions of merits, excellence or productivity? Or should we leave it to personal choice? Woman US Justice Sandra Day O'Connor, writing the Court's opinion upholding the women's choice and privacy rights as the basis for the right of abortion during first trimester, essentially admitted the complexity of the matter. In essence, she said personal choice has to continue to be the underlying justification (for right to abortion) because the factual realities of the issue have not changed the fact that the courts and medical science could not say for certainty that a fetus during the first trimester is a human being!! That is the same thing with your repeated allegation of gender discrimination in FSM official employment practices. You only look at the visual images and conclude there must be discrimination somewhere without pointing to actual practice in the process and system. Until then, I suggest we just do like Ms O'Connor did and say for now, we just leave it to personal choices. Take care for now, Amigo. And please see if you can start cutting down on your rice consumption. It's not healthy complaining endlessly about trivial matters in our islands.
